“I was trying to build something for us,” he said, his fingers tapping against the brass plate of the water fountain. “The debts were choking me, Lily. I had to make a move to clear the ranch’s liability. It was a business decision.”
I opened my purse, my fingers finding the folded white paper Marcus had given me before we entered the courtroom. I pulled it out and held it between us, the black ink of the bank audit facing him.
“You took forty-two thousand dollars from the feed account,” I said, pointing to the first line. “And then you went into Katie’s college savings and cleared out thirty-eight thousand more.”
Samuel looked at the paper, his mouth opening slightly before he closed it and looked down at his own shoes.
“I was going to put that back,” he whispered. “As soon as the land transfer cleared, I was going to replace every cent of her tuition.”
