My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

“He said they had to process the paperwork for the returned Mercedes first,” Katie said, turning back to flip the eggs in the skillet. “Once the dealership took the car back, the remaining funds in that account were released to the court clerk.”

I pulled my chair out and sat down, the wooden legs scraping against the linoleum floor. The silence between us was not the heavy, suffocating kind that had filled this kitchen during the long weeks of the investigation. It was the quiet of a house that had finally stopped shaking.

“Your father called the house from the county farm yesterday evening,” I said, keeping my voice level.

Katie stopped, her shoulders tightening slightly under the heavy knit of her grey sweater. “Did you talk to him?”

“I did not,” I said. “The deputy left a message on the machine to let us know the transfer paperwork for his personal property was ready for my signature.”

“Are you going to sign it?” she asked.

“I signed it at the lawyer’s office before five yesterday,” I said, reaching for the coffee pot. “The rental truck is back at the leasing agency in town, and the keys are in the mail to his attorney.”
