She set her clipboard on a feed bin and held the paper up to the fluorescent bulb hanging from the rafter.

“This is the notary stamp from the deed,” Elena said, her thumb tracing the faint circle of the seal. “It says Clara Hawthorne.”

“Do you know that name?” I asked.

“Lisa has a sister named Clara who works at the title company in Gentry,” Elena said.

She turned a page on her clipboard, running her finger down a list of handwritten dates.

“On March ninth, Samuel logged a white Ford Explorer through the main gate at two in the afternoon,” Elena said.

“That was the day I was in Fort Worth for the stock show,” I said.

“The gate log shows the vehicle belonged to Clara Hawthorne,” Elena said. “She was here for twenty minutes.”

I walked over to the tack room desk and pulled out the Manila envelope of hotel receipts we had found in the rental truck.

“The receipt from the Hyatt in San Antonio shows Samuel checked in at four o’clock that same afternoon,” I said.
