My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
I thought of the silver key fob Samuel had left on my desk, the key to the new Mercedes parked in our driveway. He had bought that car three weeks ago, claiming his consulting business was finally showing a profit, but now I wondered where that money had truly come from.
I took the single sheet of paper she printed and walked back to my truck without saying another word.
Elena was waiting at the kitchen table, a yellow notepad open in front of her. I set the bank printout between us, the single digit balance staring up at us.
“We have seventy-two bags of sweet feed left in the barn,” Elena said. “That will last us until Tuesday, maybe Wednesday if we cut back the yearlings.”
“We won’t cut back the yearlings,” I said.
I reached into my pocket to pull out my truck keys and felt a small scrap of paper catch on my finger. It was a crumpled receipt I had cleared from Samuel’s dresser drawer the night before, thinking it was just trash.
