“I know,” I said, staring at the numbers on the invoice. “Samuel siphoned the feed funds directly into his personal account to pay for the silver Mercedes he parked in the feed store lot.”
“We have enough hay in the loft for nine days,” Elena said, her eyes fixed on the ledger. “But the mares need the high-protein grain if we want them to carry their foals through the frost.”
“We are not going to lose these horses, Elena,” I said.
“Samuel was talking to a livestock transporter from Abilene on Tuesday,” Elena said, her voice dropping to a quiet whisper. “He was asking about the cost of hauling twelve horses across the state line without health certificates.”
