Samuel reached into his coat pocket, his hand trembling slightly, and pulled out the silver Mercedes key fob. He placed it on the table, and his lawyer slid it across the polished wood to the receiver, the metal clicking against the oak like a dropped coin.

Lisa let out a soft, high-pitched breath that sounded almost like a whistle, her fingers gripping her fake ring until her knuckles turned white.

The prosecutor then placed the five-dollar deed on the projector screen, the looping signature I had never made appearing ten feet wide on the wall. Lisa’s lawyer stood up, his voice loud as he argued that the transaction was a legitimate transfer of property between consenting adults. He claimed Lisa had acted in good faith, believing the ranch was Samuel’s to sell under the terms of our marriage.
