She looked directly at Samuel then, her eyes steady and filled with a quiet, cold anger that I had never seen in her before. Samuel did not look back; he kept his head down, his fingers tapping a frantic, silent rhythm on his knees.

Lisa’s lawyer declined to cross-examine, his face showing the exhaustion of a man who knew his case had bottomed out hours ago.

“The evidence of forgery is overwhelming,” the judge said, her voice cutting through the silence of the room. “The court finds that the respondent, Samuel Brennan, acted with fraudulent intent to divest the rightful owner of her property.”

She picked up her pen, the scratch of the nib on the paper loud in the quiet room.
