My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
I drove back to the ranch with a heavy weight in my chest, the reality of my dependence settling over me.
At four o’clock, the shadow of the porch canopy stretched long across the red dirt yard.
Katie was standing by her old sedan, lifting a heavy canvas duffel bag into the trunk.
“You are sure you want to go back to dorms tonight?” I asked, leaning against the wooden porch railing.
“My chemistry midterm is at eight tomorrow morning,” Katie said, pulling her oversized sweater sleeves down over her hands.
“You have enough gas money?” I asked.
“Tom Murphy put fifty dollars in my glove box when I stopped for air,” Katie said, a small, sad smile touching her face.
She walked up the steps and wrapped her arms around my neck, her shoulder smelling of clean laundry and cedar.
“I will be back on Friday for the hearing,” Katie whispered. “I promise.”
“Focus on your books,” I said.
My phone buzzed in my front pocket with a sharp vibration.
I pulled it out and looked at the screen.
The message was from Samuel.
