My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key ring with a yellow plastic tag attached to it.
“I found these behind the oil barrels in the tack room,” Elena said. “The tag says budget rental.”
“The truck he was loading on Tuesday,” I said.
“It is parked behind the old hay barn near the creek,” Elena said. “The tires are sitting deep in the mud.”
We walked out the back of the stable, keeping low behind the line of cedar trees that bordered the pasture. The rental truck was a twelve-foot box van, its white paint splattered with red clay from the driveway.
I took the keys from Elena, my fingers cold as I inserted the brass key into the padlock on the rear roll-up door. The metal lock yielded with a dry click.
I pushed the heavy door upward, the tracks squeaking from lack of grease.
The back of the truck was stacked high with olive-drab plastic tubs and heavy cardboard filing boxes. I reached for the nearest box and pulled the lid off.
