“I can sell the car,” he said, his hand pressing against the glass. “I can give the money back to the feed account. Just tell Marcus to ask for probation. The judge will listen to you, Lily. You’re the victim here. If you tell them you want me home to work off the debt, they’ll let me go.”

“I don’t want you on the ranch, Samuel.”

“We’ve been married eighteen years,” he said, his voice cracking. “You can’t just throw that away over one bad decision.”

“It wasn’t one decision,” I said. “It was three years of siphoning forty-two thousand dollars from the feed account. It was taking Katie’s tuition and letting her believe her own mother was the one ruining her future.”

“I was going to pay it back,” he said, his fingers tapping the metal ledge again. “I had a deal lined up in San Antonio. I swear to you, Lily, I was going to put every dollar back into her account before the semester started.”
