My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

I had only taken two sips when I heard the quick, heavy step of Samuel’s boots on the tile behind me.

“Lily, please, just give me two minutes,” Samuel said, his voice carrying that rapid, defensive pitch I had heard every time a bill came overdue.

I turned around, holding my black leather purse against my stomach, and looked at him. His hair was damp at the temples, and his eyes were bloodshot, looking smaller than they used to when we walked the pastures together.

“There is nothing left to discuss, Samuel,” I said, keeping my words slow and level.

“You have to drop the criminal charges,” he said, stepping closer until I could smell the peppermint he had been chewing to hide his breath. “For Katie’s sake, Lily. If this goes to a jury, she is going to see her father in an orange jumpsuit. Think about what that will do to her at school.”

He reached out as if to touch my arm, but I stepped back, my boots clicking against the marble.

“You should have thought about Katie before you spent her future,” I said.
