My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

I set two white ceramic plates on the table, aligning them with the worn grain of the wood. My hand brushed against the silver buckle of my belt, a habit I did not even notice anymore until the metal felt cool against my thumb.

Katie did not turn around when she spoke, her voice quiet and steady. “The registrar called from the college office about twenty minutes ago.”

I paused with the fork in my hand, waiting for the rest of her sentence.

“They received the wire transfer from the county escrow account,” she said, finally turning to face me with a small spatula in her hand. “The full nine thousand six hundred dollars for the fall semester is sitting in my student ledger now.”

She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen before sliding it across the table toward me. The official balance on the screen showed a neat, black zero next to the outstanding tuition line.

I stared at the numbers, letting my breath out slowly through my nose. “Marcus told me the receiver would clear that first, but I did not expect the bank to move this quickly.”
