My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
The empty tax folder was the first real proof that this was not a sudden impulse.
I walked out to the main barn at half past three, the sky turning the color of a bruised plum. Elena Vance, my stable manager, was already sliding the heavy wooden doors shut against the rising wind. The scent of rain and dry cedar dust filled the aisle as we buckled the brass latches on the lower stalls.
“Samuel was out here three weeks ago, right before the spring breeding started,” Elena said, lifting a heavy leather halter onto its peg. “He asked me if I knew how the county clerk recorded land transfers when there was a co-owner.”
I stopped with my hand on the latch of Midnight Star’s stall. “He asked you about the county clerk?”
“He said he was just updating the ranch’s insurance policy,” Elena said, holding her wooden clipboard tight against her chest. “But he wanted to know if a deed could be filed online without both parties standing in the office. I didn’t think much of it until today.”
