My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

“Samuel,” I called out, keeping my voice level and slow. “Get out of the car.”

He turned the key, but he didn’t move to open the door for a long ten seconds. When he finally stepped out, he wouldn’t meet my eyes, choosing instead to inspect the toes of his leather boots.

“It’s done, Lily,” he said, his words coming in that fast, defensive rush I had heard every time a business deal went south. “We have to move forward. The papers are filed with the county.”

“I am not leaving this porch, Samuel.”

Lisa let out a loud, forced laugh that sounded like dry gravel shifting in a pan. She twisted a large, glittering ring on her left hand, the cheap metal catching the morning light.

“We’ll see about that,” Lisa said, turning back to the two men waiting in the cab of the moving truck. “Bring the hand trucks inside.”

The front door didn’t make a sound because I had oiled the hinges myself three days ago, but the weight of their boots on the living room rug felt like an invasion. Lisa walked straight into the room, holding a sheet of bright yellow circular stickers. She stopped in front of the pine sideboard my father had built for my mother on their fifth anniversary.
