Katie stood up, her boots making no sound on the carpeted aisle as she walked to the witness stand. She looked so small against the high dark wood of the enclosure, her sweater sleeves still covering her knuckles as she laid her hand on the Bible and took the oath.
The prosecutor walked over to her, her voice softening as she spoke to my daughter.
“Katie, I want to show you the document marked as State’s Exhibit C,” the prosecutor said, pointing to the screen where the five-dollar deed was displayed. “Do you recognize the signature on the right?”
Katie looked up at the screen, her chin trembling for a second before she pulled her lips into a tight line.
“That is my mother’s name,” Katie said, her voice quiet but clear in the silent room.
“Were you present on the night of November third, during the derby party at the Brennan Ranch?” the prosecutor asked.
“Yes,” Katie said. “I was in the kitchen helping the caterers.”
“Did you see your father ask your mother to sign any documents that night?”
