My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
I looked at my boots, the red dirt of Gentry still clinging to the welt of the leather. “If we do that, what happens to his mother’s house?”
“His sister lives there now,” Marcus said. “She would have to sell it to pay his share of the judgment. It would leave his family with nothing.”
“And if I decline?”
“The standard restitution remains in place,” Marcus said. “He will owe the ranch forty-two thousand, which the state will garnish from whatever wages he earns in prison and after he gets out. You will never see the full amount, Lily. But his sister gets to keep her home.”
I touched the silver buckle again, feeling the weight of my father’s ranch behind me. “I don’t want his sister’s house, Marcus. I don’t want his family paying for his greed. We have the land back. That has to be enough.”
Marcus looked at me for a long moment, then reached for his pen. “It is a standard restitution plan, then. You are choosing to move forward rather than looking back.”
