My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

Elena laughed from her perch on the stepstool, her wooden clipboard held tight against her chest. “Let him unload it, Lily. The horses don’t care who signed the receipt.”

“You are a stubborn man, Tom Murphy,” I said, walking toward the back of the trailer to help him lift the first fifty-pound burlap sack.

“My father was more stubborn,” Tom said, his shoulder catching the weight of a bag with an easy, practiced heave. “He always said a good neighbor is better than a solid fence.”

We worked in silence for twenty minutes, transferring the heavy sacks from the wooden flatbed into the cedar storage bins at the back of the feed room. The smell of sweet molasses and clean grain filled the dry air, a familiar scent that made the barn feel whole again.

By three in the afternoon, the wind had died down to a gentle breeze that barely stirred the dry grass along the creek. I walked the southern fence line alone, my boots sinking into the soft red dirt where the yearlings had made a trail along the water.
