Samuel reached for the paper, his fingers twitching as he stuffed it back into his pocket.
“You are being stubborn, Lily,” he said, his voice rising as he stepped toward the back door. “You always have been.”
I walked past him out onto the front porch, the cool morning air a relief after the greasy heat of the kitchen. Samuel followed me, his boots loud on the wooden floorboards. He stopped near the railing, looking out over the north pasture where the three-year-olds were grazing near the creek.
“I never wanted it to go this far,” Samuel said, his voice dropping into that quiet, defensive tone he used whenever the feed bills got too high. “But the debt was swallowing me whole. I had to save myself from bankruptcy.”
“You did not have to forge my name to do it,” I said.
“I still care about you, Lily,” he said, reaching out a hand toward my shoulder. “I wanted to make sure you were taken care of, even after the transfer.”
