My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

“You stayed when the bank locked us out,” I said. “You worked for nothing when Samuel was trying to load my horses into those rental trailers. You’re not just the stable manager anymore.”

I picked up the black pen from the table and drew a line through the word thirty, writing forty in its place. “Forty percent, Elena. We’re partners.”

Elena looked at the page, her mouth opening slightly as if she wanted to argue, but she stopped. She looked at Katie, who was smiling, then back at me. “Forty percent means I have to help pay for the new tractor parts when the old John Deere finally dies.”

“It does,” I said, a small laugh slipping out before I could stop it. “And it means you have to listen to me complain about the price of diesel for the next ten years.”

“I can handle that,” Elena said, taking the pen and signing her name next to mine.

I took the signed partnership agreement and walked down the short hallway to my father’s old office. The room was dusty, but the air smelled of cedar and old paper. I reached behind the desk and opened the heavy iron safe, pulling out the drawer where my father had kept his land deeds.
