My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
I smoothed the thermal paper on the wooden table. It was from a jewelry store in Fort Worth, dated the Saturday of our annual derby party, for forty-two thousand dollars.
“He bought her a diamond,” I said, the ink pale but clear under the kitchen light. “He bought that ring while our guests were standing on the lawn.”
“Lily,” Elena said, pointing to the date on the receipt. “This was the same night he had those tax papers out.”
The memory came back then, sharp and cold.
“He was so insistent that I sign those papers before the guests arrived.”
He had stood by the desk with his pen ready, telling me it was just a standard homestead exemption for the county, his fingers tapping rapidly against the edge of the desk while he waited for me to write my name.
I went back to the empty filing cabinet in the office, my boots heavy on the linoleum. Underneath the drawer, caught in the metal track, was a single manila folder that had slipped out of the stack.
I pulled it free and opened it on the desk.
