“Afternoon, Lily,” she said, her voice dropping a register. “What can I do for you today?”
“I need to check the balance on the ranch operating account, Sarah,” I said, keeping my hands flat on the marble counter. “And I need a printout of the transactions from the last thirty days.”
She typed on her keyboard, the clicking loud in the quiet lobby. She stopped, stared at her screen for a long moment, then looked up at me.
“Lily, did you authorize a transfer this morning?” she asked.
“No,” I said. “Why?”
“The joint farm account was drawn down at nine fifteen,” she said, her fingers hovering over the keys. “There is twelve dollars and forty cents left in the balance.”
The room seemed to shrink, the pale green walls closing in. “The whole fifteen thousand from the breeding fees?”
“It was moved to an external account,” Sarah said, her voice barely a whisper. “I can’t see the owner of the receiving account from this terminal.”
