My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

I walked to the tool shed behind the main barn, my boots crunching on the gravel path. I found the heavy steel chain hanging from a rusty nail behind the generator, its links cold and rough against my bare palms.

I carried the chain back to the front gate, the heavy iron links clinking together with a slow, rhythmic ring that broke the silence of the pasture. I looked back at the house, where a single yellow light was shining in the kitchen window where Katie was waiting.

Samuel had spent eighteen years trying to turn this land into a balance sheet, looking at the pastures and seeing only the debts he could hide and the luxury cars he could buy with my father’s work. He had believed that because I was quiet, I would let him walk away with the breeding stock to save myself the embarrassment of a public trial.

I wrapped the steel chain around the gate post, pulling it tight until the iron links bit into the weathered cedar wood of the post.
