My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

“I will have the files prepared for you by five o’clock,” Robert said, his hand resting on the paper.

The drive back to the ranch felt longer than usual, the dust from the gravel road rising behind my truck in a gray cloud. When I pulled into the driveway, I saw a dusty blue sedan parked near the porch.

Katie was sitting on the top step of the porch, her knees pulled tight against her chest and her chin resting on her arms. She wore an oversized gray college sweater, the sleeves pulled down so far they completely covered her hands.

“Katie,” I said, stepping out of the truck and walking toward her. “What are you doing home from school on a Tuesday?”

She did not look up immediately, her shoulders shaking under the heavy knit fabric.

“The registrar’s office called me this morning, Mom,” Katie said, her voice quiet and dry. “They said my tuition check for the fall semester bounced.”

I sat down on the step beside her and reached for her hand, but she pulled her arms tighter around herself.
