My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
“Why did you look for those, sweetie?” I asked, sitting down across from her.
“I wanted to see how he wrote when he was younger,” she said. “Before he started using the computer for everything.”
She slid a yellowed notebook toward me, pointing to a paragraph written in faded blue ink.
“Look at the letters with loops,” Katie said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “The letter G and the letter Y.”
I adjusted the magnifying glass over the page, the old handwriting jumping into sharp focus.
“He always starts the loop from the bottom and pulls it up to the left,” Katie said. “Most people start from the top.”
She then slid the photocopy of the five-dollar deed next to the journal.
“Now look at your signature on the deed,” she said.
I held the glass over the name Lily Brennan, written in a shaky, looping script.
The letter Y in Lily had the same bottom-up loop, the ink thicker where the pen had lingered too long on the upward stroke.
“He wrote your name,” Katie said, her voice cracking slightly. “He practiced it.”
