He laid the rag on the counter and reached for a thick blue ledger.
“The bank president called me about twenty minutes ago,” Tom said.
I stayed quiet, waiting for the blow.
“They froze your farm line of credit,” Tom said. “The disputed title on the ranch has them spooked.”
“We have fifteen thousand dollars in breeding fees due next week,” I said.
“I know,” Tom said.
“And the winter feed shipment is supposed to arrive on Thursday,” I said.
Tom looked down at the ledger, his thumb tracing the worn leather edge.
“They think Samuel’s signature on those transfer sheets might hold up in court long enough to tie up your operating capital for months,” he said.
I looked at the rows of fifty-pound feed sacks stacked against the back wall.
“Without that line of credit, I cannot pay for the grain,” I said.
Tom flipped the ledger open to a fresh page and picked up a black ink pen.
“I’m carrying your account, Lily, and I don’t want to hear another word about it,” Tom said.
