My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
The yellow moving truck turned past the main gate at exactly eight o’clock the next morning, its heavy tires spitting red gravel against the wooden fence line. Lisa sat in the passenger seat of the cab, her head tilted back as she pointed toward the main house. Samuel followed right behind her in his silver Mercedes, the engine idling with a low, expensive hum as he parked near the porch.
I stepped out onto the wide pine boards of the front porch, my thumb automatically catching the edge of my silver belt buckle.
Lisa climbed down from the truck cab, her bright pink heels sinking into the damp Texas dirt. She held a black plastic clipboard against her chest, though she didn’t have any papers clipped to it.
“We need you off the steps, Lily,” she said, her voice high and sharp enough to make the blue heelers under the porch growl. “The movers have a schedule, and we aren’t paying them seventy-five dollars an hour to wait on you.”
I did not move an inch. I looked past her to Samuel, who was still sitting behind the wheel of his car, his eyes fixed straight ahead on the barn doors.
