My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

I sat down in the wooden chair next to her, the pine table cold under my forearms. “Did they include the signature page?”

“Yes,” Katie said, using her covered hand to slide a sheet of heavy paper toward me. “And the notary log from the afternoon of the derby party.”

I leaned in, my eyes scanning the black ink of the photocopy. The signature on the line marked for the grantor was a looping, elegant script that looked almost exactly like my own, but the angle of the letters was slightly off.

“Look at the witness signature below yours,” Katie whispered, pointing her finger at the lower half of the page. “The notary clerk recorded the identification details for the witness who stood in the study that afternoon.”

I read the name written in the clerk’s register: Cheryl Hawthorne.

“That is Lisa’s sister,” I said, my voice dropping.

“She was not even in Gentry that weekend, Mom,” Katie said, her quiet words landing hard in the silent kitchen. “She was posting photos on her social media page from a hotel in Galveston.”
