My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
Inside were three rows of green hanging folders, their labels written in my father’s neat, sloping print.
“These are the land tax records from ninety-eight,” I said, lifting a thick sheaf of yellowed paper.
“He took everything,” Elena said, reaching in to touch the edge of another box. “Every deed, every breeding certificate, every tax return.”
“He was trying to make sure I could not prove the history of the title,” I said, my voice steady despite the cold weight in my chest.
At the bottom of the second box, beneath a stack of old bank statements, lay a blue ledger book. I reached down to touch the cover, but the sound of gravel crunching near the main house made me freeze.
“Someone is coming,” Elena said, her hand moving to the edge of the door.
I pulled the blue ledger out, tucked it under my arm, and slid the heavy metal door down until the latch clicked.
“Go back to the barn,” I said. “I will handle this.”
I walked back toward the main house, the blue ledger heavy against my ribs.
