“He’s got his mother’s eyes,” Elena said, leaning against the wooden stall door. “And his grandfather’s reach.”

The colt stopped, his ears twitching forward as he looked at us. He let out a tiny, soft breath, his nose dipping toward the straw before he lifted his head high.

“He needs a name, Lily,” Elena said. “We can’t keep calling him the colt in the ledger.”

I reached over the gate, letting the colt sniff the palm of my hand. His muzzle was soft and warm against my skin. “Justice,” I said. “I think we’ll call him Justice.”

“It’s a good name,” Elena said, reaching down to pat Midnight Star’s neck. “It fits the place.”

We walked back to the house as the first cold drops of rain began to hit the red dirt. On the kitchen counter sat three letters that had arrived in the afternoon mail, all of them bearing the return address of the Gentry County Jail.
