My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
“Samuel told me she was in the guest room resting because she had a migraine,” I said, remembering the way he had kept the study door closed during the entire evening.
“He lied to you so he could write her name in the book,” Katie said, her voice shaking slightly. “The notary clerk, Brenda Higgins, didn’t even ask for her ID. She just took Samuel’s word for it because he bought her husband’s old truck last winter.”
I picked up the black magnifying glass my father had left in the kitchen drawer and held it over the notary seal. The state license number was recorded, but the expiration date on the notary’s commission had been altered with a fine-tip pen.
“They forged the notary stamp too,” I said.
“They did,” Katie said, leaning back in her chair. “Lisa’s sister did not sign this in Gentry. Marcus says the ink on the original document matches the pen Lisa uses for her business checks.”
“We have the bank statements showing the forty-two thousand dollars Samuel took from the horse feed account,” I said. “And now we have proof of a forged public record.”
