My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend

I looked out the high, narrow window of the basement office, watching the tires of a passing pickup truck stir up the red dirt on the street level. The cost of this step was a heavy one; my daughter would have to see her father’s name on a criminal docket in the local newspaper, and our family’s private ruin would be laid bare for every neighbor in Gentry to read.

“The warrant will be ready in thirty minutes,” Deputy Miller said, hanging up the phone. “My men are already keeping an eye on the rental house Samuel took near the county line.”

“He thinks he is still negotiating a settlement,” I said.

“He is about to find out the state of Texas does not negotiate with forgers,” the deputy said.

The sun was low over the western ridge when I pulled the truck back onto the ranch driveway, casting long, blue shadows across the red clay road.

I parked the truck near the entrance, leaving the headlights on so they lit up the heavy iron gate my father had welded himself forty years ago. The air was cold now, smelling of dry pine needles and the damp earth of the creek bed.
