My Husband Sold My Two Million Dollar Land For Five Dollars To His Girlfriend
He didn’t wait for me to sit before he grabbed the black plastic receiver from its hook. His fingers were tapping against the metal ledge, a fast, frantic clicking that I could hear even before I put the receiver to my ear.
“Lily, please,” he said, his voice coming through the small black speaker in a high, defensive rush. “You have to talk to the prosecutor. They’re trying to send me to Huntsville. You know what it’s like down there. My asthma will flare up within a week.”
“You should have thought about the air in Huntsville before you signed my name to that five dollar deed, Samuel,” I said.
“It was Lisa,” he said, his eyes trying to look everywhere but at my face. “She told me the county was going to freeze the assets anyway because of the debt. She said if we moved the deed to her name, we could protect the acreage from the bank. I only did it to keep the ranch from being split up.”
“You did it because she promised you a way out of your debts,” I said. “You did it to buy that Mercedes and the watch on your wrist.”
