I stepped back, out of his reach, and looked down at his wrist. Below his frayed shirt cuff, a new gold watch gleamed in the early light, the bezel unmarked and heavy.
“That watch looks like it cost more than Katie’s tuition,” I said.
He pulled his sleeve down quickly, his fingers tapping against his thigh.
“It was a gift,” he said.
“From the money you took from our breeding fund,” I said.
He did not deny it. He turned on his heel and walked back inside, leaving the screen door to slam against the frame.
I walked down the steps and headed toward the main barn, my boots sinking into the soft red dirt. The air inside the barn smelled of sweet feed and clean straw, a familiar comfort that usually quieted my mind, but today the silence felt thin.
Elena was waiting in the third stall, holding her wooden clipboard tight against her chest while she checked the water level in Midnight Star’s bucket.
