“I didn’t know what it was, Mom,” she said, her voice trembling. “I thought I was helping save the ranch.”

“Oh, Katie,” I said, reaching out to pull her into my arms.

She let herself lean against me, her forehead resting against my shoulder.

“He made me promise not to tell you,” Katie said. “He said you would worry too much.”

I held her tight, watching the shadow of the old oak tree stretch across the red dirt of the driveway.

“It is not your fault,” I said into her hair. “We are going to fix this.”

“Is Dad really trying to sell the land?” Katie asked, pulling back to look at me.

“We are going to find out exactly what he did,” I said.

Elena was waiting in the barn office when I walked Katie inside to get some water. The desk was covered in breeding certificates and horse registration forms, the papers sorted into neat white piles.

“We need to list every yearling we have on the property, Lily,” Elena said, her wooden clipboard held tight against her chest. “If Lisa tries to bring another trailer down here, we need legal proof of ownership for every head of horse on this land.”
