“Do not stay up too late, Dad,” she said.

“I won’t,” I said.

I watched her walk down the concrete steps to her car, her red scarf disappearing into the dark as she opened the door. The headlights swept across the front of the house as she backed out of the driveway, the bright beams catching the dry branches of the oak tree near the gate.

When her taillights disappeared down the street, I closed the front door and turned the lock. The click of the deadbolt sounded loud in the empty hallway, a short, sharp crack that seemed to linger in the corners of the ceiling.

I did not go back upstairs. I walked through the kitchen to the back patio, pushing the sliding glass door open to the cool night air.

The stone tiles of the patio were cold against my shoes, a thin layer of frost beginning to form on the grout lines. I sat down in one of the metal chairs near the table, the iron cold even through my trousers.
