“You went to the Pine Creek Lodge?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said, stepping back to the stove. “We had dinner there on Saturday night. The trout was excellent, though the service was a bit slow.”

I knew from Detective Vance’s report that her SUV had not cleared the toll plaza toward the mountains all weekend.

“I made your favorite,” she said, turning the gas flame down. “Sourdough toast with the salted butter from the local bakery.”

She began plating the food, arranging the dark pancetta beside the eggs with a precision that reminded me of a structural blueprint. She set the white porcelain plate in front of me along with a small linen napkin.

“Eat,” she said, her voice soft and encouraging. “You need to keep your strength up after the surgery.”

“Where is Mia?” I asked, taking a fork.

“She called last night from Boulder,” Nicole said, leaning against the island with her hands tucked into her apron pockets. “She said she needs another twelve hundred dollars for her textbooks this semester.”

“Twelve hundred for books?” I asked.
