The tape kept playing, but Mia did not seem to hear the rest of the words.
She sat perfectly still, her face turning a dull, chalky white under the fluorescent lights.
“Turn it off,” Mia said.
Vance reached down and pressed the stop button.
The silence that followed was louder than the recording.
“She was talking about my college tuition,” Mia said, her voice barely a whisper. “She told me you were trying to take it away from me.”
“The accounts were nearly drained three weeks ago,” I said. “Brandon found the transfers.”
“She made me write that letter to you,” Mia said. “She said if I did not stand up to you, we would lose the house.”
Vance reached into the cardboard box and pulled out a thick blue envelope.
The paper was heavy, the same shade of slate blue that Nicole used for her formal stationery.
