I watched her hand as she worked, noticing how she kept her emerald ring turned inward toward her palm.

“Is Mia coming home this weekend?” I asked.

“No,” Nicole said. “She has a study group in Boulder. She is still very upset with you, Robert.”

“I know,” I said.

“You should call her,” Nicole said, zip-locking a clear plastic pouch of cosmetics. “But give her some space first. She thinks you are being paranoid.”

“And what do you think, Nicole?” I asked, keeping my voice level, using the precise tone I used when discussing a structural delay with a subcontractor.

She stopped packing for a fraction of a second, her hand resting on the zipper of the bag.

“I think you are tired, Robert,” she said, her voice dropping to that soft, soothing register. “We both are. We just need to get away from Denver and focus on each other.”

She zipped the bag closed with a sharp, decisive motion.

“I am going to load this into the car now,” she said.

“Do you want some help?” I asked.

“No,” she said. “It is light.”
