Redstone Construction CEO Learns About Blue Envelope in Hospital Recovery Room

There was no envelope, blue or otherwise, among the insurance documents.

I reached deeper into the back of the drawer, my hand brushing against cold metal.

I pulled it forward, the heavy steel scraping against the wooden drawer slide. It was a green cash box with a three-digit combination lock, heavy enough to hold a significant amount of weight.

I had never seen it in the house before.

I tried the dial, turning it to the numbers of our wedding anniversary, then Mia’s birthday, but the lock remained closed.

“Robert?” Nicole’s voice was soft, coming from the doorway.

I slid the drawer shut, the wood clicked into place as I turned around. She was standing in the shadows of the hall, her silk robe tied tight at her waist.

“What are you doing in the dark?” she asked, her voice carrying that quiet, practiced softness.

“Looking for some aspirin,” I said, my hand resting on the desk.

She walked in, her emerald ring catching the light from the hallway as she twisted it around her finger. “You should have asked me, honey. I do not want you bending over.”
