We stood on the roof until the sun had fully disappeared behind the western hills, leaving only a thin band of orange light along the horizon. The streetlights below us began to flicker on, one by one, creating long lines of yellow light through the gray streets.

“We should go,” I said, my voice sounding flat in the cold air. “The temperature is dropping.”

“Can we go to the house?” she asked. “I want to help you.”

“There is not much left to do,” I said.

“I want to help,” she said.
