He set the pen down on the desk with a sharp click.

“And Robert,” he said, turning back toward the door. “Do not drink anything she pours for you.”

At nine o’clock that evening, the Cherry Creek house was dark except for the single brass lamp on my desk.

I sat in the leather chair, looking at the framed photograph of Mia on the bookshelf. She was sixteen in the picture, holding a soccer trophy and laughing under the bright summer sun.

I wondered how I would ever explain this to her, or if she would even believe me.

The door to the study opened with a soft click, and Nicole walked in carrying a silver tray.

“I brought you some water,” she said, setting the tray on the corner of the desk.

She had changed into a dark silk robe, her face scrubbed clean of makeup. She looked younger in the dim light, almost like the woman I had met in that Denver coffee shop twenty-one years ago.

“Thank you,” I said.
