I followed her down the stairs, watching her high heels click against the hardwood steps.

She carried the bag out to her SUV, which was parked in the driveway under the shade of the large silver maple tree.

She placed the bag in the back cargo area and closed the trunk with a solid, metallic thud.

She got into the driver’s seat, the engine starting with a quiet, powerful purr.

I stood on the concrete walkway as she shifted into reverse, her face pale behind the tinted glass.

The red taillights of Nicole’s car disappearing down the street as I held the detective’s business card in my hand.

By Monday morning at eight o’clock, the house smelled of fried pancetta and fresh rosemary.
