“I have been in tighter spots than a Cherry Creek lobby, Frank,” Brandon said. He stood up, folding the blueprints into neat, precise squares. “Let us get the gear loaded.”

By two o’clock, the afternoon sun was reflecting off the glass facade of the fourteenth street high-rise. I sat in the passenger seat of Brandon’s white utility van, watching the double glass doors of the lobby through the side mirror.

Brandon had changed into a gray canvas work shirt with a faded telecom logo on the pocket. He carried a heavy yellow toolbox in one hand and a clipboard in the other, his boots making a clean, rhythmic sound on the concrete as he approached the entrance.

The lobby was quiet, decorated with large potted ferns and a polished limestone floor that looked like ice under the recessed lighting. A young man in a dark blazer sat behind a curved marble desk, his attention fixed on a computer screen.
