“I think you should see someone,” she said, taking a step closer. “Dr. Mercer recommended a cognitive specialist who works with post-operative anxiety. It’s very common after anesthesia.”
“I don’t need a specialist recommended by Dr. Mercer,” I said.
“You do,” she said. “For Mia’s sake. She’s terrified of you right now.”
She climbed into bed and turned her back to me, pulling the duvet up to her shoulders. The silence in the room was absolute.
I stood up and walked out into the carpeted hallway, my socks making no sound. I needed a glass of water, or perhaps just a space where I could breathe without feeling the walls closing in.
As I passed Mia’s door, I saw a thin line of light underneath it. I knocked softly, twice.
“Mia?” I whispered.
There was a sudden movement inside, followed by the sharp creak of her desk chair. The door swung open, and Mia stood there, her eyes red behind her glasses.
“I just wanted to talk about the housing deposit,” I said. “I can write the check tonight from my personal account.”
