“What happens to the surgical clinic?” I asked.
“The board suspended Mercer’s privileges before sunrise,” Vance said.
He pulled a black digital recorder from his pocket and set it on the metal surface between us.
“We have four hours of tape from the penthouse living room,” Vance said.
Mia looked at the small black device as if it might jump off the table.
“I want to hear it,” she said.
“You do not have to listen to this, Mia,” I said.
“I spent three weeks telling myself you were a monster, Dad,” she said, her voice rising slightly. “I need to hear what she actually said.”
Vance looked at me, waiting for a signal.
I nodded once, my fingers pressing against my bare wrist.
“We will start with the recording from nine-thirty last night,” Vance said.
He pressed the round button on the side of the recorder.
The speaker hissed with static for a second before the sound of a heavy door closing filled the small room.
