Redstone Construction CEO Learns About Blue Envelope in Hospital Recovery Room
Nicole was sitting in the blue vinyl chair, her posture stiff, her emerald ring catching the harsh fluorescent light as she twisted it around her finger. She stood up, walked to the narrow window overlooking the parking garage, and checked her watch. She did not look at me.
I kept my breathing shallow, my eyelids half-closed, letting my head rest against the flat pillow.
“Is he awake yet,” she asked, her voice low as she stepped toward the doorway.
A nurse outside gave a brief, muffled answer that I could not catch.
Nicole returned to her chair, her fingers tapping a restless pattern on her leather handbag. The small room felt tight, smelling of iodine and the cold air of the air conditioning unit humming in the wall. I shifted my weight slightly, letting out a dry cough to see if she would move.
She was on her feet instantly, her eyes scanning my face before she smoothed the front of her cream-colored sweater.
“Robert,” she whispered, leaning over the metal guardrail of the bed.
I let my eyes open fully this time, giving her a slow, groggy nod.
