Redstone Construction CEO Learns About Blue Envelope in Hospital Recovery Room

She saw me first.

The smile did not disappear immediately. It froze, her lips parting slightly as her eyes traveled from my face to the two officers standing behind me.

“Robert?” she said.

Vance stepped into the doorway, his gold shield held flat against his palm.

“Nicole Brennan,” Vance said. “Julian Mercer. I have a warrant for your arrest.”

Mercer reached for the edge of the door to push it shut, but the larger officer stepped forward, his boot catching the frame with a solid thud.

“Step back, Doctor,” the officer said.

Nicole’s hand went to her throat. She did not look at Mercer. She looked only at me, her eyes wide behind her small frame.

“Robert, what is this?” she asked. Her voice had that quiet, practiced softness that had kept me quiet for twenty-one years.

“The blue envelope,” I said. My voice was surer than I expected it to be.

“I do not know what you are talking about,” she said, her emerald ring catching the light as she reached out toward me. “This is a mistake.”
