“Criminal justice,” I said, reading the heading.

“I spent the last two months thinking about how she did it,” Mia said, her face very still as she looked out over the skyline. “How she and Mercer managed to hide everything for so long.”

“The police found them, Mia,” I said. “Vance did his job.”

“But they almost did not,” she said. “If Brandon had not found those records in Phoenix, you would have gone into that operating room again.”

“I did not go back,” I said.

“But you could have,” she said, turning her head to look at me. “She had the signature ready. She had the private mortuary selected.”

“It is over now,” I said.

“It is not over for me,” she said, folding the paper back into a tight square. “I need to understand how people like her can look at someone they love and see nothing but a ledger.”

“Your mother was different,” I said, though I knew the words were hollow.

“She was my mother,” Mia repeated, and for the first time, her voice cracked. “And she was willing to let them kill you for four million dollars.”
