Nicole stood by the professional-grade range in a cream-colored silk blouse, her hair pinned up in a neat twist that left her neck bare. She was whisking eggs in a copper bowl, her emerald ring catching the bright morning light coming through the high kitchen windows.

I rubbed my bare left wrist, feeling the smooth skin where my heavy gold watch usually sat when I was anxious.
