“Nicole,” I said, keeping my voice level, the same tone I used when discussing a drywall bid. “I was thinking about the surgery. How did you first hear about Dr. Mercer?”
She did not flinch or pause. She lifted the salad tongs and served a portion of greens onto Mia’s plate, her movements smooth and deliberate.
“He was featured in that Denver lifestyle magazine last spring,” she said, her voice soft and even. “The one with the modern homes on the cover. They had a whole section on top medical specialists in the metro area.”
“I don’t remember seeing that issue,” I said, slicing the chicken.
“It was in the stack by the fireplace for months,” she said, twisting her emerald ring around her finger. “I saved it because of his credentials. He went to school out west, and his record was pristine.”
“Where out west?” I asked.
“Arizona, I think,” she said, her ring twisting twice more. “Phoenix, perhaps. I just remember the article mentioned his high success rate.”
